Apocalypse When?

Maybe it's global warming; maybe it's those mosquitos or the collapse of bee colonies; maybe it's Brexit, or maybe it's the election of Donald Trump, but apocalypse is in the air -- again.

The historical Jesus is generally described as an apocalyptic prophet who preached that the end -- the day of judgement -- was very near and all should be ready.  A couple thousand years later, we are still waiting. Those four horses we've been expecting -- self-driving electric vehicles instead?

Readers interested in what's trending when it comes to apocalyptic thoughts might enjoy reading this article that appeared in last week's edition of the T Magazine, a life-style publication that appears episodically with The New York Times Sunday editions. Among other things, it explores the notion of whether the world actually ends when the apocalypse comes or whether there is a post-apocalyptic afterlife -- generally depicted as more like hell than heaven.

And then there's the recent surge in  popularity of Margaret Atwood's 1985 dystopian novel "The Handmaid's Tale," now also a TV series on Hulu. Here is a review of the new show.  And here is another review,

Readers interested in that and other novels of the same genre might also enjoy taking a look at this NYT article published back in January.

Then of course there is George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four," which I wrote about here.

Got any thoughts on some new way it all might end?  There's definitely a market out there for such works of fiction.
