Replying to E-Mail Like Something Out of a Romance Novel

Google has for some time had an app called "Smart Reply" that can generate responses to your email for you if you find that task too tedious. But the responses, composed by Google's artificial intelligence (AI) engine, have apparently been on the tedious side, themselves.  Too factual, not particularly conversational.

That's apparently about to change according to an article published by BuzzFeed.

Soon, you can sound more like something out of a romance novel, which, as per an earlier post, probably means about as sexy as it gets. These days, the Romance genre is closer to something that in years past would have been identified as pornography.

According BuzzFeed, Google has fed the entire text of over 2,800 romance novels into its AI system as a means of teaching the program better communications skills. This works well, the article said, because such novels all have essentially the same plot. "By reading thousands of such books, the AI can detect which sentences contain similar meanings and gain a more nuanced understanding of language."

What else do you suppose that Google computer is getting a "more nuanced" understanding of and where will this lead?  The article quotes Andrew Dai, the lead developer on the project, as admitting that the AI engine could possibly write it's own romance novels and, on another front, a person could fall in love with it --sort of like what sometimes comes from phone sex, I suppose.

Since the law of unintended consequences has yet to be repealed, stand by for an even Braver New World.
